Two decades ago, Bill Wappler had an idea to use serialized reusable containers as mobile data points. It all started with the insight gained from a simple container identity and location data set. What if moving containers could tell us a story?
Where have they been, where are they going, what’s inside, who needs them, and when?
Reusable containers are physical links in the supply chain. The ability to follow that chain, even parts of it, has always been an aspiration for supply and logistic professionals. The concept of data points as supply chain windows may not sound as exciting as the technology behind in-home VR gaming or a watch you can use as a phone. But for millions of manufacturers of all sizes across the globe, employing technology to solve supply chain issues has changed everything.
Our technology has saved our clients millions of dollars, countless labor hours, improved worker safety, and is the cornerstone of many plants sustainability efforts. These results all stem from the ability to track, recover, and reuse containers and racks.
From this piece of disruptive technology, Bill’s vision to achieve end-to-end supply chain visibility took shape. The challenge has always been for technology to catch up to Bill’s ideas, what he knows is needed, and what he believes is possible.
Technology is catching up. The concept of Internet of Things (IoT), which has become a mainstream idea, was coined in 1999 by Kevin Ashton from a supply chain presentation he made to Proctor & Gamble. That’s right, supply chain issues spurred the thinking that is seminal to today’s most essential devices. IoT is one of the most important pieces in today’s leap in supply chain visibility.
A vision doesn’t come from a place of isolation. Surgere supports a think tank mentality where the needs and desires of our customers are fed into the advanced computer engineering and development teams, lab and facilities testing, and balanced by our allied partners. This comes with a good dose of creative thinking.
